With a multitude of cuisine choices from all corners of the globe, there is a true international 'flavour' to this idyllic Mediterranean Island.
For those new to Cyprus you have to try local Cypriot dishes, which consist of many fine banquets including; Kleftico, lamb or goat cooked in a clay oven, Souvla, barbequed lamb or pork, Moussaka, a delicious dish of meat and vegetables with a thick sauce to bind it, Shieftalies, small sausages which have a unique taste. Maybe try a meat or fish Meze, a traditional mix of 12 or more small dishes, which will no doubt leave you full and satisfied. The brave or adventurous amongst you may be tempted to try sheep brains as well.
Cyprus has many fine restaurants and eateries with food from many cultures and backgrounds and located in the most beautiful of surroundings. You will find not only Cypriot, but Indian, Mediterranean, Italian, Thai, Russian, Lebanese, Chinese and more. You will find English food too, with burgers, breakfasts, steaks and Fish and Chips and much more readily available to feed the heartiest of families.
In the bustling holiday resorts, there are dozens of eateries of all kinds, and all prices. With breakfasts and dinners available from about €4.00, there is a huge choice. The price of meals does vary, but a very reasonable meal for two costs around €20.00; expect to pay €50.00-€85.00 in the better restaurants. Beer is around €2.00 for local brew (Keo or Leon) and €3.00 for local spirits. Imported beers and spirits can cost a little more, with cocktails around €5.00 each. Try the local Zirvania, the local hooch spirit, used as a digestive between small Meze style meals, eaten slowly while chatting to friends, it is strong and not for the faint hearted.
Why not finish your meal with a strong Cyprus coffee? Served in a small in cup, it is strong and powdery to taste and has to be sipped slowly, as the traditionally ground coffee bean sediment sits at the bottom of the cup hence accompanied by a glass of water, just in case.
Don't just stay in the resorts, be adventurous and try places in the small rural villages, you will be welcomed with open arms and amazed and fulfilled by their traditional fayre. Whatever your taste you will find it in Cyprus!
